Kerala had been battling dry weather in September but since the last one week, Monsoon had once again revived over South Peninsula, especially over Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Even though it’s the fag end of Monsoon season, both the states have been recording moderate to heavy rains. In fact, we expect moderate to heavy rains and thundershowers to continue over both these states.

During the last 24 hours also, many places in Kerala recorded heavy rainfall activity. Punalur recorded very heavy rain to the tune of 83 mm. Palakkad district also recorded heavy rain to the tune of 72 mm.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Friday, Alappuzha recorded 35 mm of rain, followed by Idukki 39 mm, Kottayam 33 mm, Thiruvananthapuram 3 mm and Kochi 12 mmm.

These heavy rains have been attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and Southwest Bay of Bengal. A trough is also seen extending from this system across Kerala. This system is persisting over the area since the last two days and is further expected to stay put for some time and cause more rains over the states.

Thus, we can say that even after the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon, we expect rains in Kerala to continue with heavy intensity over the southern parts and less intensity over the northern districts.

As of today, Kerala is the only state that has shown excess rainfall. At present, the state is rainfall surplus by 23%. The state was rain surplus by 32% in the third week of August due to extremely heavy rains which led to widespread flooding along with a large loss to life and property.

However, the weather of Kerala became almost dry since August 19 and the rain surplus dropped from 42% to 24%.
