Good monsoon rains have remained in hiding from Chennai for the past few days. In fact, the last time the city received good rainfall was on June 24 wherein 24 mm rain was recorded.

Thereafter almost dry conditions have been witnessed over the region with occasional traces of light rain over the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

However, it seems like the rain Gods were in quite a good mood yesterday. Heavy rains lashed Chennai after a really long time. Usually, the city of Chennai does not receive much rain during the Southwest Monsoon because of lying in the rain shadow area.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 a.m on Thursday, the Meenambakkam observatory in Chennai recorded a massive 47.3 mm of rainfall. However, the Nungambakkam observatory recorded a mere 3 mm of rainfall during the same time frame. These weather conditions have been attributed to localized cloud development of the region.

Now, as per skymet weather good rains will once again make an appearance over Chennai around July 11 and 12. During this time, a feeble trough is expected to develop over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Tamil Nadu region.

Thus, good Monsoon rains will then lash the city of Chennai. Until then the residents of Chennai may witness on and off isolated light rainfall activity.
