Heavy Chennai rains to subside, dry weather to prevail

September began with a bang in Chennai and other parts of north Tamil Nadu as they received moderate to heavy rains during the first week of the month. Light rain is likely to continue for another 24 hours after which rain will take a breather until next week when pleasant weather returns.

Multiple weather systems had been giving rain over Chennai during past few days. Firstly a trough extending from the cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal was extending upto North Tamil Nadu coast. Besides, there was another cyclonic circulation persisting over Lakshadweep and Maldives areas.

However, both these systems have weakened and are rapidly becoming insignificant for Tamil Nadu. The rain intensity over the state will reduce in next 24 hours and dry weather is expected to prevail during this week, including capital city Chennai.

Tamil Nadu is currently witnessing a rain surplus of 6% due to on and off moderate to heavy rain during Southwest Monsoon. However, the state enjoys heavy Monsoon rain during Northeast Monsoon.

Until Northeast Monsoon arrives, Tamil Nadu will have to reel under occasional rain and dry weather this September. According to Skymet Weather, next rainy spell in Chennai is likely around 13th September, however, till then temperatures are likely to rise, leading to discomforting weather.
