Chennai rains which were in hiding for the past few days have made a comeback and that too with a bang. So much so that the city has recorded heavy rains in the last 24 hours.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Nungambakkam observatory saw 60.2 mm of rains along with which the Minambakkam observatory recorded 50 mm of rainfall.
The Southwest Monsoon is not the main season for Chennai in terms of rains as compared to the other parts of the country which see quite enough Monsoon rains. The state of Tamil Nadu lies in the rain shadow area due to which the capital city Chennai also observes mild amount of Monsoon rains only.

Chennai begins to receive Monsoon rains soon after it enters Kerala and is also the first Metropolitan city to receive Monsoon rains. However, its June rains are a mere 56 mm, which shows that the rain amount is less than it is in other places.
The month of July which happens to be the core Monsoon month also does not give massive rains for Chennai wherein the city manages to receive just about 103.8 mm.
This season, the month of June was good enough for Chennai and normal rains were recorded over the city. Meanwhile, July began on an even better note and the city has already recorded over half the monthly rains in just 24 hours’ time.
Whenever, the axis of the Monsoon trough shifts upward, rainfall activity over the central parts of the country reduce. However, Tamil Nadu tends to see good rainfall on account of a feeble trough along the coast or a circulation.
This rainy situation is expected to continue over the city of Chennai for the next 24 hours at least as more showers are expected to lash the city. Thereafter, rainfall activity will gradually reduce, and dry weather will make a comeback.
