Mumbai rains to remain on the backseat for some more time

Updated on March 26, 2018 10:10 AM: Heatwave in Mumbai: City continues to battle hot weather as mercury soars to 32 degrees at 9 am

After witnessing record breaking temperatures on Sunday, Mumbai continues to battle severe heatwave conditions on Monday as well. The day started with above normal average temperatures as soon as sun came up.

Mercury shot up to 32°C around 9 am itself, which is almost five degrees above normal for that point of time. Day maximums had soared to 41°C on Sunday, which was eight degrees above the normal average temperature of 33.2°C. In fact, the suburb of Thane recorded 43.6°C.

At present, the weather is extremely uncomfortable on account of high humidity levels. Now, as the day progresses, temperatures would also keep rising. Heatwave refuses to relent as chances are there that day maximums will continue to settle in the similar today as well. However, a lot depends on what time sea breeze sets in.

According to Skymet Weather, hot easterly winds from the nearby areas of Vidarbha and Telangana continue to blow across Mumbai. These winds are primarily responsible for the steep increase in the mercury. But another important factor is the sea breeze. On Sunday, the sea breeze that usually sets in by 1 pm had set in by 3 pm, paving way for the rise in day maximums. Hot winds had delayed the sea breeze yesterday. If the sea breeze manages to set in early on Monday afternoon, we can expect some respite in terms of temperatures.

However, the drop would a marginal one and maximum temperatures would settle in higher 30s only. Thus, weathermen predict that heatwave would continue to prevail over Mumbai and nearby areas at least for the next 24 hours. Major relief is on card thereafter, as the winds pattern might change from hot easterly winds to comparatively cool northerly winds.

Updated on March 25, 2018 8:10 PM: Heatwave grips Mumbai, no relief in offing

Heatwave engulfed Mumbai on Sunday as mercury soared to 41°C. It was the hottest day since 2011 when mercury had reached 41.3°C on March 17.

The day maximum was eight degrees above the normal average of 33.2°C. If this was not enough, weathermen are afraid that no relief is likely during the next 24 hours as well.

Day maximums may rise further on Monday, according to Mahesh Palawat, Vice President- Meteorology and Climate Change, Skymet Weather. If this happens, Mumbai may break the all-time high record of 41.7°C recorded March 28, 1956.

Heatwave to strike Mumbai, Pune, Nashik in next 48 hours Heatwave is likely to grip several parts of Maharashtra very soon. Places like Mumbai, Pune and Nashik must gear up to battle high temperatures in the coming days. [yuzo_related] According to Skymet Weather, most parts of Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra are presently experiencing near normal or below normal temperatures. Mumbai has also been recording below normal day and night temperatures. The temperatures were under control since last many days, due to the cool winds blowing from north and northwest direction, However, wind pattern is now all set to change and these cool winds would now be replaced with hot easterly winds. Temperatures over Vidarbha region are already reaching around 40°C.

Thus, hot winds from these areas would now result in steep rise in mercury over Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra.

However, this rise in temperatures would be seen after 24-48 hours. We can expect an increase in maximum temperatures to the tune of 4°C to 6°C over Nashik and Pune. Meanwhile, Mumbai and nearby areas would be worst affected and would see a rise of 6°C to 8°C in the coming days.

Temperatures would be reaching in higher 30s in the range of 37°C to 39°C. Being a coastal station, the feel-like affect would be much more. In fact, these conditions can be touted as the heatwave conditions.

Other coastal districts such as Ratnagiri, Bhira and thane will also experience extremely hot and sultry weather conditions. Discomfort level over Konkan & Goa will be much more as humidity levels remain generally high over these areas. Whenever high humidity combines with high temperatures, it leads to increased discomfort level.

So, people of all these regions are advised to take precautions against heat stroke and keep their bodies hydrated and covered as in the coming days sun rays will be very harsh.
