No relief is being witnessed from the intense heat, which has been prevailing in the state of Maharashtra. In fact, the temperatures of most parts of the state are constantly settling a few degrees above normal.

Parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada has been the worst bearer of the brunt of heatwave conditions being experienced by isolated pockets like Akola. Whereas, the other regions of the division are witnessing above normal temperatures by 2-4 degrees, clocking at early 40’s.

On Thursday, Chandrapur recorded the maximum temperatures at 42.4ºC, followed by Nanded at 42ºC, Parbhani with the daytime high at 41.9ºC and Nagpur recording the maximum temperatures at 40.9ºC.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for the constant rise in mercury levels over Maharashtra and heatwave like conditions gripping parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada can be associated with the dry and hot northwesterly inland winds. These winds are blowing from the hot land masses from the adjoining states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat wherein the temperatures are already on the higher side.

In addition to this, persistent dry and hot weather over the entire state is also adding up to the rising mercury levels and intense summer heat.

Skymet Weather does not foresee any changes in the weather conditions of Maharashtra for at least next four to five days. Thereafter, some isolated rain and thundershowers are expected to occur at isolated parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada that would help in bringing down the mercury levels and cooling down the weather conditions.

At this juncture, let us look at the impact of this hot weather condition on the agriculture of Vidarbha and Marathwada:

Because of the heatwave, crop damage is a chance. Premature fruit-drops are also expected and hence farmers are advised to stay cautious for the same.

Further, fruits on the trees may develop diseases like black spots, and citrus hence, farmers are advised to undertake insecticide spraying depending on the type of infestation. Pruning is also very useful for reducing the disease infestation that can be used against the insecticides.

As the temperatures are also high, farmers are advised to irrigate the summer crops of Groundnut and sugarcane along with the fruit-bearing Orchards of Mango and Pomegranate as per requirement. Farmers can continue harvesting of Grapes and Orange.
