Much to people’s relief, Chennai rains is all set to make appearance over the city. Chennaiites have been battling extremely hot weather conditions for the last many days. In fact on Thursday, the day maximums had already reached 43°C around 12:30 pm, making weather unbearable. However, weather has taken a u-turn and we can now expect some pre-Monsoon rains over the state capital.
Rain bearing clouds are already hovering over Chennai and rain and thundershowers may follow soon. With this, day temperatures have dropped significantly and are presently settling around 38°C.
According to Skymet Weather, a trough is seen running from South Chhattisgarh to South Tamil Nadu. This trough has been attracting humid winds from Bay Bengal.
Now, this increased moisture and high day temperatures have resulted in development of convective clouds over Chennai and nearby areas. “We can expect isolated light rain and thundershowers over the city during the next 3-4 hours. However, western suburbs of the city may see one or two good spell,” said Mahesh Palawat, Vice President-Meteorology, Skymet Weather.

True to their nature, these pre-Monsoon showers will be intense in nature but of shorter duration in patches. However, the relief that we get from these weather activities will be momentary only and temperatures will continue to settle above average.
Weathermen predict that city is not likely to get any relief from hot and humid weather for the next 48 hours. Thereafter, mercury is likely to take dip marginally but till then, people will have to battle heatwave conditions.
“Such high temperatures for coastal city like Chennai makes weather horrible, exposing people to chances of sun stroke and dehydration,” added Palawat.
