Heatwave in Rajasthan, MP, Delhi, Gujarat, Vidarbha, relief after May 29

The first half of May witnessed frequent thunderstorm and dust storm activity over Rajasthan and Northwest plains. Due to these activities, the temperatures remained below normal. Heatwave which usually commences at the beginning of May remained at bay in wake of the pre-Monsoon activities.

However, since the last few days, the weather of entire Northwest and Central India is almost dry. Winds are also blowing from northwest and west direction. These dry and hot winds have increased the temperatures over Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. Thus, all these regions are under the grip of heatwave conditions now.

The criteria for the declaration of heatwave- Whenever, the normal maximum temperatures are 40°C or less, the departure from normal should be 5°C or more to declare heatwave conditions. The second criteria is, the normal temperature of a station is more than 40°C, then departure should be at least 4°C above to declare heatwave. The third criterion for the declaration of heatwave is, whenever, the temperature reaches 45°C or more, heatwave is declared irrespective of the normal temperature.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperatures in Vidarbha dropped in the last 24 hours leading to the abatement to heatwave. However, we expect the temperatures to increase once again.  Thus, heatwave will once again make a comeback in parts of Vidarbha.

As per Skymet Weather, heatwave conditions are expected to persist over Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha until May 28 or May 29. Until then, the residents of these regions will witness scorching heatwave like conditions. During that time, pre-Monsoon activities will once again commence over many parts of Northwest and Central India. Therefore, a marginal decrease in temperatures is expected which would abate heatwave from some parts of these regions during that time.
