Blazing hot weather seems to spare none this season. Kolkata has once again come under the grip of heatwave conditions.
On Friday, the capital city recorded day temperature of 40.5°C which was five degrees above the season’s average of 35.4°C.
Kolkata has already been witnessing abnormally high day temperatures for several weeks now. On most of the days, the city has recorded day maximum above 38°C. Mercury had already peaked on April 11 with 41.3°C, breaking the highest maximum temperature record in last 10 years.
Moreover, high levels of humidity has further worsen the situation.
However, some marginal relief is likely during next 24 hours wherein temperatures are likely to dip by at least 1-2 degrees.
According to Skymet Weather, a trough is running from North Bengal up to Odisha that could lead to development of thunderclouds over the city. With this, we can expect isolated thundershowers or thunderstorm activity over the city during the weekend.
But significant weather activity is only likely from the first week of May when pre-Monsoon activity is expected to increase.
With mere 0.4 mm of rain so far, April 2016 is turning out be one of the driest April for the city.
In last decade, April 2016 is the third year where in city has recorded below 1 mm of rain. Prior to this, April 2009 and 2014 recorded 0.2 mm and 0.1 mm of rain, respectively.
