Heatwave has gripped parts of northwest India and has not spared the northern hills as well. While the temperatures are on a rise in the plains of north India, the hilly terrains are sizzling too. Thus planning a trip to the Himalayan region at this time of the season in order to battle heatwave in the plains is not a very good idea.
The intensity of heatwave can be made out of the fact that even the hilly terrains of North India are also reeling under rising mercury levels. The hills of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are already recording above normal temperatures thereby resulting in heatwave situation.
In fact, the so-called crown of India, Jammu and Kashmir along with the state with magnificent scenic mountains, Himachal Pradesh are reeling under severe heatwave conditions. Most districts are already witnessing the mercury levels climbing 5-7°C above the normal.
In the last 24 hours, Batote, Kukernag, Pahalgam, Srinagar, Katra, Gulmarg, and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir and Kalpa and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh observed the daytime high mounting 7 notches above the normal.
The reason for the heatwave condition to prevail in the hilly terrains of North India can be associated with the absence of an active Western Disturbance that gives rainfall over the region.
As per Skymet Weather, the weather condition across the hills is expected to remain the same for another 4 to 5 days. However, a Western Disturbance is likely to approach the Western Himalayan region on April 21 which will, in turn, bring a spell of rain and thundershowers. These rainy spells will help in curtailing down the mercury levels to some extent thereby bringing a brief respite from the prevailing hot weather.
