As predicted by Skymet Weather, Vidarbha and Marathwada have been battling hot weather conditions. So much so that heatwave conditions were also reported over isolated parts of Vidarbha. Chandrapur has recorded the maximum temperature at 45.4ºC on Wednesday.

Heatwave conditions are declared when the day maximums are 40ºC or above and should be above the normal average temperature by five degrees.

The other regions of the state are also suffering from heatwave like conditions, barring the coastal stations of Konkan division. Almost all the districts of Vidarbha and Marathwada are touching or surpassing 40 degrees Celsius with some even registering the daytime highs in mid-40’s.

On Wednesday, Akola recorded the daytime high at 44ºC, Parbhani 43.6ºC, Wardha 43.6ºC, Nagpur 43.1ºC, Jalgaon 43ºC and Malegaon recorded the maximum temperature at 42.4ºC.

In fact, isolated parts of Madhya Maharashtra, particularly, the southern half of the region is also witnessing hot day conditions with the temperatures mounting above the 40-degree mark. On the other hand, the temperatures of Konkan are settling in mid-30’s. Meanwhile, North Madhya Maharashtra saw the maximum settling nearing 40 degrees Celsius.

Pune and Satara recorded the maximums at 38.6ºC, Kolhapur at 36.3ºC whereas the capital city of Mumbai witnessed the daytime high at 35.2ºC.

As of now also, the weather of almost the entire state is likely to remain dry. Any chances of rain and thundershowers over the region are not expected soon. Thus, the temperatures would continue to remain near or beyond the 40-degree mark and a few districts would continue to combat heatwave conditions.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

The prevailing weather condition is favorable for incidences of pest and insect infestation hence farmers are advised to take proper precautions to avoid pest attack. Farmers should also apply light and frequent irrigation to the summer crops, vegetables, and orchards.

In Marathwada, farmers can continue April pruning in the grape orchard and can give support to banana plants and newly planted mango plants to protect them from the high-speed wind.
