Heatwave builds haven in Delhi, relief in offing

April 20, 2017 1:11 PM |

Warmer days ahead for Delhi-NCR, temperatures to soar soon

Delhi is famous for its extreme seasonal weather; whilst the winter season, with its cold weather, is liked by many, summers on the other hand has very few enthusiasts. And the ongoing merciless heatwave over Delhi and NCR has made the weather an unappetizing and unavoidable necessity.

This has been one of the longest spell of dry and hot weather over Delhi and NCR. This is due to the absence of any major pre-Monsoon activity. Even though North India has witnessed one after another Western Disturbance but they failed to induce a significant trough or cyclonic circulation over plains. The absence of any weather system has ensured that weather remain dry over northwest plains.

The hot and deadly southwesterly winds continued over Northwest plains including Delhi and NCR. These winds are coming for sweltering regions of West Rajasthan and South Pakistan. These hot winds have aggravated the mercury levels.

But, as they say, change is the constant; we expect a feeble cyclonic circulation to develop over central Pakistan and adjoining Haryana and Punjab in next 24 hours. So these ongoing southwesterly winds will now start blowing from Arabian Sea leading to increase in humidity.

The humid winds from Arabian Sea, in combination with the induced cyclonic circulation can give thunderstorm/dust storm activity at one or two places over Delhi and NCR on April 21-22. Chances of light rain cannot be ruled out but these activities will be of short duration.

So for the time being, we don’t expect significant change in weather but marginal relief is possible.

By April 24, a strong Western Disturbance will approach which will induce a trough over northwest plains of India. Hence, around April 25 rain and thundershowers can be witnessed at many places over North India. Delhi and NCR may also receive few short spells of rain and thundershowers during that period. With such weather activity in offing, heatwave is likely to bid adieu but hot weather will still be seen.

Another rainy spell is possible around April end. So, we can expect continuous spell of rain for rest of the month.
