Heatwave in Odisha has become a standard feature for quite some time now. Several areas have been reeling under severe heatwave conditions. So much so that record breaking maximums were observed in several parts of Odisha. Places including Bhubaneswar and Bhawanipatna have already seen record maximums.
The one pocket where temperatures were on the constant rise is Titlagarh. Here, the maximum reached up to 48.5 degree Celsius, which happens to be the highest maximum ever recorded during the month of April. While no sign of relief was seen in the past few days, rain gods have finally given some rain over the region.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Titlagarh recorded a good 11 mm of rain followed by Sambalpur where 1.2 mm of rain was observed. Traces of rain were also witnessed in isolated areas including Jharsuguda and Keonjhargarh.
A trough is extending from Gangetic West Bengal to Interior Odisha. Also, moist winds from the Bay of Bengal are now blowing over interior parts of Odisha. These conditions have resulted in an increase in humidity levels further resulting in cloud formation. Thus, scattered light rain was observed in Odisha.
These rains have resulted in the drop in maximums over several areas of the state. So much so that heatwave has abated from several parts. For instance, Titlagarh which was reeling under severe heatwave conditions has witnessed a drop in maximums by over three degrees in 24 hours. While the maximum temperature was 45.5 degrees on April 26, it came down to 42 degrees on April 27.
Isolated pockets are still reeling under heatwave conditions, but, scattered light rain is likely to continue for the next 24 to 48 hours.
