Heat Wave Unlikely For Mumbai This Week, Warm And Sultry Weather Likely

Mumbai and small pockets around received very light drizzle, around midnight. There was a very light sprinkle, from low clouds, localized in nature. A trace of rainfall was recorded at the airport observatory, Santacruz. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 33.8°C, very close to normal. Earlier, the coastal city measured the highest temperature of the decade in April. Santacruz recorded 37.9°C on 15 Apr 2024, about 5°C above the normal and amounting to heat wave conditions.

The coastal stations come under heat waves when the day temperature reaches or exceeds 37°C and above the normal by 4.5°C or more. There is no likelihood of a repeat during this week. The temperature is likely to hover around 33-34°C, with high humidity levels.

A trough line is marked from North Madhya Maharashtra to Coastal Karnataka and Goa, in the lower levels. Also, an anticyclonic circulation is marked off the Konkan Coast, in the Arabian Sea. Under the combined influence of these systems, scattered light rains are likely over Madhya Maharashtra, between the 24th and 26th of April. There is the least likelihood of these showers closing into the coastline of Konkan. At best, some clouds may spill over, around Mumbai during that period.

The proximity of the trough, with an embedded cyclonic circulation, will keep the sea breeze component sweeping the suburbs, early in the afternoon. This will suppress any abrupt rise in the day temperatures. The land breeze is likely till around forenoon hours and change over to sea breeze, rather quickly, thereafter. With the early onset of westerly winds, the humidity levels are likely to be high. With temperatures around the mid-30s and humidity close to 50%, warm and sultry conditions will prevail, as a regular feature for the city, during this week. The steady rise in the temperature is likely around the weekend, between the 26th and 28th of April.
