Heat Wave Unlikely During This Week, Pre-Monsoon Rains Likely Over Southern Parts

Typical pre-monsoon heat wave conditions have failed to establish over different parts of the country. Despite, a prolonged dry spell over Peninsular India, the mercury did not cross the heat wave index at most places. Temperatures have risen beyond 40°C, over South, Center, West and Eastern parts in small pockets, but yet to sustain for familiar heat waves over different parts.

North India has been frequented with a series of western disturbances. Barring border posts of West Rajasthan like Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, Phalodi and Jodhpur, no location has so far breached 40°C in Haryana, Punjab, East Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh. So, there is no question of having any heatwave conditions, so far. Another round of western disturbance and related weather activity is expected during this week and spilling over to the next one also. Heatwave conditions are unlikely in April over these parts.

Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the eastern states had long stints of pre-monsoon weather. The remnant effect still continues. A few locations over West Bengal and Odisha like Bankura, Purulia, Baripada, Angul, Titlagarh, Sambalpur and Bolangir exceeded 41°C for a brief duration amounting to mild heat waves in some pockets. Heatwaves have abated from the eastern and central parts. Vidarbha and Marathwada have recorded under 40°C temperatures for the last few days and therefore no likelihood of heat wave.

Southern parts of the country remained the hottest this season. Rayalaseema region persistently recorded temperatures of about 42°C at Anantapur, Kurnool, Cuddappah and Nandyal. Some locations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh like Nalgonda, Khammam and Bhadrachalam have exceeded 40°C but still reach the heat wave mark. Pre-monsoon activity is likely to commence soon over the interior peninsula from 17th - 18th April onward. This will marginally cool the region and may remain short of heatwave conditions as such.

With pre-monsoon activity catching up over different parts, heat is unlikely to build up over the favourite zone. Yes, mild heat waves in very small pockets may come up over Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. However, typical seasonal heat amounting to scorching conditions is unlikely in the next one week or ten days.
