Many parts of the country have been reeling under extreme heat for the last week or so. More significantly, the eastern parts and interiors of Peninsular India witnessed scorching heat with mercury crossing the 47°C mark. Pockets in Jharkhand and West Bengal bore the front, with persistent sizzling heat. Relief is likely for the heat-struck states. Mitigation will start today itself over some parts and will cover most parts of the country in the next 5 days. Parts of North Gujarat, Saurashtra & Kutch and Rajasthan may be left out during this solace event.
Multiple weather systems will contribute, to ease out the crippling conditions over different parts. The relief may not be simultaneous and for equal duration across various regions. However, large parts of the country will get comforted, lasting for 3-5 days. Heavy weather activity and stormy conditions are likely over some parts of the country. Hailstorms and lightning strikes may become a menace in some pockets.
A cyclonic circulation is likely over parts of Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand. This feature will get fueled with moisture from the Bay of Bengal. An east-west trough will extend from parts of North Madhya Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh to Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. A north-south trough will run across the interiors of Peninsular India. Building heat over North India will get arrested with the arrival of yet another western disturbance on 09th May.
Under the influence of these weather systems, fairly widespread rain and thundershower activity will occur over many parts of the country. Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha can expect heavy rainfall and thunderstorms between 06th and 08th May. Lightning strikes and hailstorms may also occur in a few places. East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand may have stormy conditions between the 06th and 10th of May. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh can expect the weather activity between 09th and 11th May. Southern parts of the country covering Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana will have pre-monsoon thunderstorms accompanied with strong winds and lightening between the 07th and 14th May.
The heat wave is likely to abate from different parts at different timings, providing relief, at least for a few days. Exercise caution against loss of life and assets. Severe lightning, accompanied with strong gusty winds and hail storms, more so, for Odisha and West Bengal needs to watched carefully. Some standing crops may also come under the shadow of inclement weather. Parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan may continue to have heat waves in pockets, albeit, not as harsh as on earlier occasions.
