Heat Wave Over Rajasthan, Dust Storms Follow On Weekend

West Rajasthan is considered the hottest region of North India during the pre-monsoon season.  The arid terrain and lack of weather systems reduce thunderstorm activity. Accumulated heat does trigger dust storms, raising the wall of dust, quite frequently along the border posts of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Phalodi, Bikaner, Suratgarh and Ganganagar. Mercury easily breaches the sizzling mark of 45°C on many days at many locations.

The state is reeling under soaring temperatures. Heat wave conditions are likely over most parts of the state. Ganganagar, Phalodi, Barmer and Jaisalmer exceeded 44°C, yesterday. Barmer recorded the highest temperature in the country, at 45.2°C. Even the state capital, Jaipur breached 44°C yesterday, for the first time in this season. The scorching heat is likely for the next 2 days and partial relief follows on the weekend, with a dust storm over a wide area.

A cyclonic circulation is marked over the Central Pakistan region in the lower levels. Fresh western disturbance is arriving over the mountains, tomorrow. The cyclonic circulation will get charged and also move over West Rajasthan and border areas. The weather system is likely to have a moist feed from the Arabian Sea, across the Gujarat region.

In the next two days, the mercury is going to soar, in excess of 45°C at quite a few places over the state. ‘Loo’ conditions are likely over the northern and western parts of the state. On the 10th and 11th of May, severe dust storm activity is expected, more pertinently over the farther parts, close to the border.  Jaisalmer, Barmer, Phalodi, Bikaner, Ganganagar and Suratgarh will have a bigger risk than others, of howling winds and blinding dust. Plumes of dust may travel eastward, with the westerly winds over Punjab and Haryana.

The eastern parts of the state may have more of thunderstorm activity, followed by strong winds and showers. Deep westerly trough in the higher levels, trailing the main system, may trigger some hailstorm activity at isolated places, on these two days. The remnant effect may even last, with isolated weather activity, on 12th May as well.
