Plains of North India will remain under the grip of a heat wave, severe in some pockets, during this week. No immediate relief is expected. The scorching heat may even roll over to the next week, as well. Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, North Rajasthan and Delhi will continue to sizzle, without a break. Mercury is expected to breach 45°C mark in some places, in a few days. The eastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand are also reeling under extreme heat with mercury hovering in mid 40’s.

Feeble western disturbance is moving across the hilly states as an upper air system, without making any noticeable impact. Heatwave has reached some pockets of northern mountains. Banihal, Bhadarwah, Chamba, Dharamshala, Kullu, Mandi, Nainital, Tehri are all in excess of 30°C, the benchmark for Heat waves in the mountains. Plains of North India are swept by dry and hot northwesterly winds, advecting heat from across the border.

Parts of Punjab along the borderline and Haryana region contiguous to Rajasthan are hotter than the rest. Mercury is in excess of 43°C at Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Hissar, Narnaul, Rohtak, Sirsa, Kurukshetra, Ganganagar, Suratgarh, Anupgarh,  Bulandshahar, Aligarh, Hamirpur, Prayagraj, Fursatganj and Varanasi. Some of these stations have registered mercury levels of 44°-45°C.

The heat wave will continue over the entire region till the weekend. It may even be severe in some pockets. Isolated dust storms/thunderstorms are likely along the foothills of Punjab and some parts of North Rajasthan on the 14th & 15th of June. The activity will not suffice to offer any relief from the oppressive heat over the region.
