Prolonged dry weather conditions over large parts of the country have been driving the mercury levels, much beyond the normal. Pockets of south, center and eastern states have been reeling under extreme heat. Heat wave conditions are likely to continue in few areas of these region, for the next 3-4 days.
Dry northwesterly winds have been sweeping large parts of central states. Inactivity of Peninsular trough is heating up interior parts of south India. Anticyclone over Bay of Bengal is deep over the sea and unable to stream in moist winds, over land. Combination of all these factors will trigger heat wave in small pockets of some states, with temperature possibly rising close to mid 40’s.
Zone of 40°C or more is quite spread out and covers Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. Mercury level in excess of 40°C has been recorded at Sholapur, Jeur, Akola, Amraoti, Nagpur, Washim, Chandrapur, Brahmapuri, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Gulbarga, Kurnool, Anantapur, Cuddappah, Nandyal, Angul, Sambalpur, Titlagarh, Jamshedpur, Bankura, Midnapore and Rajnandgaon. Temperatures may rise further by 2-3°C over parts of Marathwada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. Heat wave conditions in some pockets are likely between 04th and 07th April. Pre monsoon activity is likely to come in over large areas of central, eastern and southern parts, commencing 08thApril and continue for next 4-5 days.
