Eastern states and interiors of the South Peninsula have been reeling under extreme heat for the last few days. Severe heat waves crippled parts of West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand. Blazing mercury level, in excess of 47°C raided interiors of West Bengal and Jharkhand. Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh has been braving oppressive heat for the last many days. There is relief likely, of varying degrees, over most parts badly struck with the scorching heat, this season.

Multiple weather systems will join hands to spread relief and mitigate the bane of large parts of the country, during next week. A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over parts of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal on 06th May. This feature will keep meandering over the eastern states for nearly 4-5 days. This circulation will draw moist winds from the Bay of Bengal. Also, this system will be joined by a marked trough, along the Indo-Gangetic plains. Anticyclones in the Bay of Bengal will also fuel warm and moist winds. Multiple weather systems, working in tandem, will trigger a large spread of pre-monsoon stormy activity over the eastern and central parts of the country.

The pre-monsoon Peninsular India trough, a semi-permanent feature, is getting revived. A strong stream of southerly winds from southwest Bay will act as a catalyst to commence much-awaited thunderstorm activity over the southern states. The oscillating trough will invade most parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Parts of Maharashtra will come under the peripheral effect, for a shorter duration. The state of Gujarat may escape the bout of large-scale weather activity.

Severe weather activity is likely in some parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. This season is notorious for having strong thunderstorms and lightning strikes, accompanied by gale-speed winds over the Bihar plateau, Chota Nagpur area of Gangetic West Bengal. Inclement weather conditions are expected in some parts of these areas between 07th and 09th May 2024. Damaging hailstorm activity is likely at some places. The residual effect will reach and affect southern parts of Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and a few pockets of Vidarbha and Marathwada.

The southern parts will have a large spread of pre-monsoon thunderstorms, simultaneously covering different pockets. Heat-struck regions of Rayalaseema, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu will be relieved of oppressive conditions. Severe thunderstorm activity is likely over South Interior Karnataka, Southern parts of Andhra Pradesh and farther parts of Kerala bordering Tamil Nadu.

Heat wave conditions are likely to abate from most parts of the country during this period. The second week of May will remain in the comfort zone for most parts, particularly the oppressive zone of eastern states. Fresh build-up will be needed to revive the hot conditions. These are likely to spill over to the second fortnight of May.
