Heat and Rain: Weather of Delhi on a roller coaster ride

Delhi Weather 1

From hottest morning of the season to much needed sigh of rainfall, the weather of Delhi seems to be on an adrenaline high. On April 2, Delhi woke up to a morning which was hottest of the season. With temperatures mounting up to 23.9°C the mercury level was 5 degree above the normal. Even the maximum temperature was 38°C which is 5 degree Celsius above normal.

Interestingly on March 13, Delhi recorded its minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius which was the lowest for the month of March. Even the maximum temperature was 23.6 degrees Celsius. But just within a span of 20 days, the minimum temperature has crossed the maximum of March 9 and jumped to 23.9°C. So we can say that the minimum temperature of April 2 has surpassed the maximum temperature of March 13.

The reason for these significantly high temperatures can be attributed to southwesterly winds which are travelling from south Pakistan and Rajasthan. Over this region day temperatures are running in mid-40s. For example: Nawabshah of Pakistan has recorded 46 degree Celsius. This continuous flow of hot winds is keeping the temperature on the higher side over Delhi and northwest plains.

But that much needed sigh of relief is here as weather gods will open their gates and shower the region with rainfall.

According to Skymet Weather Chief Meteorologist Mahesh Palawat, “We expect scattered light showers over Delhi and NCR around April 4-5. Many parts of Punjab and Haryana will also receive light to moderate rain and thundershower activity. Even the hilly reaches will get good rainfall activity. This rainfall can be attributed to the active Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir”

He further continued, “From April 6 even the wind direction will change and start blowing from north and northwest region which will be comparatively less hot than the prevailing winds.”

This upcoming rain activity will lead to drop in temperatures and bring much needed relief over the region.
