Heavy Rains in Punjab

The Southwest Monsoon in Punjab is practically for two months. Intensity wise the Monsoon current remains weak by the virtue of its distant location from the Bay of Bengal from where the current comes. Accordingly, the normal rainfall in the state and the city is also low, it is one of the least rainy pockets during Monsoon after Rajasthan.

However, there are situations when the state picks up rainfall and that is basically during the Break Monsoon Condition or when a fresh Western Disturbance along with the Monsoon current is seen affecting the state of Punjab.

The cities or the locations that are along the foothills see heavy rainfall and these rains even trickle down to the adjacent plains. As far as Punjab is concerned plains of Pathankot and Gurdaspur see these rains.

There is a varying intensity of rains during the Break Monsoon condition. It rains more in the foothills and comparatively less over the plains. Thus, we can say that rains are not even in some pockets. Highly uneven distribution takes place along the foothills wherein the intensity can be either moderate, heavy or very heavy. This holds true for both Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Also, when the Trough is running along the foothills, the dynamics of Trough are such that it doesn’t keep stagnant which keeps bringing the variation.

In the last four to five days, since the Trough has shifted, parts of Punjab have been recording good rains. In the last five days, Patiala has recorded 236 mm of rains against the normal of 225 mm for the month of July exceeding the monthly normals as well. Extended rains have been seen over Ludhiana, Patiala, Pathankot, and Jalandhar. While in a span of five days, Amritsar has seen 119 mm of rains against the monthly normal of 186 mm and Ludhiana has recorded 134 mm of rains against 210 mm. Whereas Pathankot has till date recorded 183.1 mm of rains against the normal of 425 mm of rains.

The Trough over the foothills is likely to stay for 48 hours wherein intense rains will be seen for the next 24 hours and will subside a little in subsequent 24 hours which will then be followed by lesser rains. A weather system is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal which will further decrease the rains by pulling down the Trough.
