The parts of West Bengal and Odisha have been experiencing dry weather since last many days. However, Sub Himalayan West Bengal region has been lucky to witness some rains in the last 24 hours. Now in the coming days, we expect dry weather to continue across both the states. However, February 23 onward, we can see weather taking a u-turn with development of significant weather systems. With this, rains and thundershowers would lash both the states, accompanied with lightning strikes.

The capital city of Kolkata would also see some relief from ongoing warm and humid afternoons as some good spells of rains are likely to make way towards the city.

According to Skymet Weather, an Anti Cyclone is expected to form over North Bay of Bengal. In wake of this system, southeasterly winds from Bay of Bengal will increase the moisture content. Further, these winds will get merged with winds from northwesterly directions, thereby leading to the formation of a confluence zone over Gangetic West Bengal and Coastal Odisha.

This formation will result in light scattered rains over northern and interior parts of Odisha as well as Gangetic West Bengal starting from February 23 till February 26. During this course, intensity will be peak on February 24 and we predict light to moderate rains with few heavy spells.

The spread and intensity of these rains will be more over Gangetic West Bengal and North Coastal Odisha. We can also expect intense lightning strikes as well as hailstorm activities with squally winds over these areas during this period. Moreover, parts of Sub Himalayan West Bengal will experience scattered showers with the intensity remaining on the lower side.

According to Skymet’s predictions, places like Bankura, Medinipur, Diamond Harbour, Kolkata, 24 Pargana in West Bengal, while Kendujhar, Deogarh, Baleshwar and Baripada in Odisha would come under the grip of these rains.
