Hailstorm and lightning likely over Nagpur, pesky weather next 3 days

Nagpur, the tiger capital of India is heading for inclement weather conditions commencing today and lasting for the next 3 days. The 3rd largest city of Maharashtra, after Mumbai and Pune, Nagpur has nearly faced winter drought by remaining devoid of any significant rain during the season. The wet spell in Nagpur is likely between 16th and 18th February lashing thunderstorm and lightning with a fair chance of hailstorm in some parts.

The winter capital of Maharashtra, Nagpur along with its parent meteorological sub-division Vidarbha has been drought-stricken this winter season. Nagpur has received only 3mm of rainfall since 01st January (on 29th January) and running dry thereafter for nearly 3 weeks. The sub-division of Vidarbha has been the least rainiest this season as compared to rest of the region. Vidarbha has recorded just 0.8mm rainfall against normal of 14.7mm since 01st January and reels with a huge deficiency of 94%. While Marathwada is a shade better with a shortfall of 46%, Madhya Maharashtra has been deluged with a mammoth surplus of 664%.

Hot weather conditions have been prevalent for Nagpur last few days. While the mercury has consistently been in the mid 30’s, the minimum temperature is also above the normal being in high teens. This wet spell will lower the day temperature in Nagpur to about 26-28°C and minimum also will see a drop 0f 3-4°C over the next 3 days. Weather activity in Nagpur is expected to be more intense on 17th February and mild on the other 2 days. The residual effect may cause cloudy sky with a light thunderstorm or lightening even on 19th February.
