While the southern states of the country are still trying to cope with the aftereffects of cyclone Vardah, the northern hills particularly Jammu and Kashmir are enjoying the second snowfall of the season.

Kashmir had been under the influence of dry weather since a long time this year that concluded on Saturday when many areas of the valley witnessed rains.

Gulmarg and Pahalgam witnessed fresh snow on Monday making way for freezing and chilly weather conditions.

Chilly weather has been prevalent over Leh and border town of Kargil in Ladakh region that shivered in -11.4°C and -9.1°C respectively. In last 24 hours from 08:30 am as on Monday, minimum temperatures plunged in Pahalgam that witnessed -4.9°C and minimum recorded in Gulmarg was -5.2°C.

During the similar time frame, Srinagar, the capital of the state observed minimum settling at -0.5°C, Kokernag recorded the chill at 0.8°C. Other districts of the state also shivered in cold weather conditions.

The reason for the snowfall can be attributed to two consecutive Western Disturbances that have given scattered snowfall since last three to four days over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Moreover, after this spell of snow, the weather is expected to go dry with the temperatures plummeting further though somewhat cloudy sky at Jammu and mostly clear sky at Leh are foreseen in the next 24 hours.

While the state is a mainstay for a lot of winter and snow activities including skating, sledge-rides, cable car rides and skiing, season’s snowfall has contributed to help the state sustain its crown of being one of the best and most favored tourist destinations.
