Parts of Gujarat have been raining heavily today. Steady, continuous and intense rains have lashed parts of Saurashtra and central Gujarat. Moderate showers have drenched South Coastal Gujarat as well. Intense and heavy rains are likely for the next 48 hours, on the 29th and 30th of July and a major chunk of it today itself. Weather conditions will improve and remain good from 31st August onward. Another spell of decent rains will come back on the weekend for the interiors of Gujarat.
A cyclonic circulation is marked over extreme southeast Pakistan-the Sind region and Northeast Arabian Sea. The trough extends eastward, running across northern parts of Saurashtra and central Gujarat. There is also an east-west shear zone across 22°N, passing through and through the state and reaching the eastern shore of coastal Odisha and West Bengal. The combined influence of these systems is striking the region with widespread rains, embedded with isolated heavy thunderstorm cells.
Heavy to very heavy rains are likely through the day today across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Nadiad, Godhra, Kheda, Surendranagar, Morbi, Viramgam, Mehsana and Patan. Intense moderate showers are expected over Basankantha, Sabarkantha, Deesa, Palanpur and Himmatnagar. The weather activity will get confined to central and north Gujarat tomorrow, albeit not as heavy as today. The circulation over the Arabian Sea and adjoining parts is shifting northward and also weakening from 31st July onward. Rains are likely to take a backseat from mid-week onwards.
Fresh impetus for the state is foreseen, sometime around the end of this week. The remnant of the weather system coming up over the Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal will travel along the shear zone. It is likely to reach Southwest Madhya Pradesh and North Madhya Maharashtra, in the proximity of central and north Gujarat on the 03rd and 04th of August. A fresh bout of rains will strike these parts, but not as heavy as the current spell.
