Gujarat to receive more rains as the effect of Cyclone Vayu continues

June 14, 2019 12:22 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The long spell of dry weather in Gujarat came to an end on June 12 when for the first time, the state received rains in the month of June. These rains were in the wake of Cyclone Vayu. During the last 24 hours, fairly widespread rains and thundershowers occurred over Gujarat with a few heavy to very heavy spells.

The effect of Cyclone Vayu is still being felt over many coastal stations. Moderate rains are continuing over coastal stations of Diu, Junagarh and Dwarka. Squally winds are still blowing in the Porbandar region which reported Northwesterly winds of 35 kmph at 5:30 hours today, while Diu reported wind speed of 30 kmph. Also, the cities of Porbandar, Dwarka and Junagarh reported winds of 30-40 kmph.

So, we can say that the effect of Cyclone is not over yet in the state of Gujarat. At present, Cyclone Vayu is moving in a West-Northwest Direction away from Gujarat. The intensity of rains will reduce by tomorrow. However, scattered light rains with one or two spells of moderate rains will be observed in the Saurashtra region with isolated spells in Kutch.

On June 16, scattered light rains are expected in Kutch and Saurashtra region particularly in the western parts of Gujarat. On June 17 and 18, we expect the revival of rains over many parts of Gujarat as the Cyclone is likely to recurve in a Northwest direction after June 16 while weakening gradually and reaching the Kutch region on June 18 as a Depression or a Well-Marked Low.

So, we can say that the influence of Vayu will continue until  June 18. By that time, the rain deficiency in Gujarat will come down significantly.
