Updated on August 2, 2017, 14:00 PM: Gujarat Flood: Death toll rises further; light rains to continue

The fury of the devastating deluge in Gujarat has left ‘can’t be erased’ mark in the minds of the residents, people are trying hard to bring life back on track. After submerging the districts such as Banaskantha, and Patan, Monsoon rains have now become quiet in Gujarat and is occurring in light intensity.

After paralyzing most parts of the state, rains have now decreased tremendously over Gujarat and the heavy spells that caused flooding was taken over by light showers. The last 24 hours also brought light spells and most parts had recorded single digit rains only. Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Idar recorded 9 mm of rains, Porbandar 5 mm, Surendranagar 3 mm, and Ahmedabad and Rajkot both observed 2 mm of rains each.

Despite the fact that heavy rains took a backseat, the death toll for Gujarat floods has further risen reportedly to 224 with some more bodies being recovered. The rescue operation in the flood affected regions is still on a high and there are possibilities of the death toll to mount more.

Southwest Monsoon had played havoc in Gujarat after hitting it worst in the last 70 years. The torrential, flood causing rains in Gujarat had reportedly claimed more than 200 lives so far thereby paralyzing most parts of the state and dislocating several others. More than 80,000 people were relocated to safer places.

The deluge also submerged over thousands of hectares of farmland and killed over 40,000 animals thus crippling almost the entire state. The worst flood hit city Banaskantha which was a rain deficit region until a year ago alone had swallowed approx. 61 lives with approx. 7 in the neighboring city of Patan. With possibilities of more bodies to be found, the death toll is expected to mount further.

The depression which was over South Odisha and Coastal Andhra was responsible for such deluge causing rains. In addition to this, a high volume of water released from Dantiwada and Sipu dams in other parts of the region and neighboring state Rajasthan also crippled the state.

As per Skymet Weather, at present no significant weather system is present over the region and the Monsoon trough is running over Indo-Gangetic Plains. A cyclonic circulation is persisting over Saurashtra and Kutch region and hence scattered light rains are likely to continue for the next 2 days.

Thereafter, this weather system will also fade away but as the moisture will still be available in the atmosphere, chances of localized development of clouds will be the possibility that may result in light rains.

Though the intensity of rains will be reduced gradually, it will still impact on the ongoing relief operations. While the rain water has still not seeped in, the prediction of more light rains over the state is not going to provide much relief and the situation is likely to remain grim for another two days.

The state Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has stationed himself in Banaskantha district to oversee the relief operations. Recently, the Union Minister Smriti Irani also visited the flood-affected region across the state. Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced monetary help for the victims and funds for state reconstruction.
