Stepping up their efforts to woo the farmers, the central government would be soon conducting a pan-India survey to assess the plight of farmers. The survey would help in ascertaining farmers’ income and indebtedness for the current crop year (July-June).
Replying to Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that the 'Situation Assessment Survey of Agricultural Households' would be done during the 77th round of the National Sample Survey in the current calendar year.
He further added that the sole aim of the survey is to determine a “comprehensive assessment of the situation of agricultural households in the country, including their income, expenditure and indebtedness”.
Crop year 2012-2013 was the last year when this survey was last conducted. Thereafter, the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) has not done any such survey.The completion of this survey is based on several measures that includes adequacy of the current data, availability of resources and manpower, areas of concern and development priorities of the government.
In the recent interim Budget, Government of India has claimed to double the farmers’ income by 2022. The inter-ministerial committee that was set up for doubling farmers' income by 2022 has considered the estimates of agriculture households' income survey which was during the 70th round of NSS survey data as the base level income.
