During the Monsoon season, the locations along the foothills are prone to heavy rainfall activity. In fact, Gorakhpur is one of the station in East Uttar Pradesh which lies along the foothills.

Heavy rainfall activities in these areas are mostly attributed to 3 main reasons –

1) Whenever the Monsoon trough shifts close to the foothills,

2) When some weather system is formed in the Bay and

3) When some cyclonic circulation is formed over the region

Currently, a cyclonic circulation is seen over Northeast Uttar Pradesh and adjoining region. Due to this system, during the last 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall activity has been recorded over the city.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Gorakhpur has recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 232.6 mm.

As per Skymet Weather, most of this rainfall took place during the early and morning hours. Within 3 hours, from 2:30am to 5:30 am on Wednesday, 124 mm of rain was recorded, followed by 90 mm in the next 3 hours i.e. 5:30 am to 8:30 am. Therefore, we can say that it dumped the monthly quota of rain in just 6 hours.

Thus, this rainfall activity is the 2nd heaviest rain for the month of June for the city of Gorakhpur in 24 hours, as the heaviest rain was recorded in June 2013 that was 342.9 mm.

Moreover, the normal rainfall for the month of June for the city is 185.5 mm. However, in the last 24 hours, it has surpassed the months average rainfall in just 6 hours and as of June 27, Gorakhpur has received a total of 285.8 mm of rain.

Furthermore, we expect more rains to occur over the city in the coming days as Monsoon is likely to cover the parts of the state including the city of Gorakhpur any time soon.
