The performance of Southwest Monsoon in Mumbai has not been satisfactory this season. Barring June, when Mumbaikars observed record breaking rain, July and August proved to be a damp squib. For instance, Mumbai in the month of August received a paltry 154.1 mm of rain against the monthly normal of 529.7 mm.

September however, seems to be performing a little better than the previous months. According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Mumbai has so far received 120.1 mm of rainfall, which is almost half the monthly average of 312.3 mm. So far there has been only one spell of good rain in the city - between September 10 and September 14. During this period Mumbai had recorded 103 mm of rain.

A similar spell is again approaching Mumbai. According to Meteorologists at Skymet, the fresh spell of rain will be witnessed between September 18 and September 20. A depression which at present is over South Chhattisgarh and its adjoining areas will move in a west-northwesterly direction and affect the weather in the region from September 18. One or two places in the city may receive heavy to very heavy rain during this period.

Looking at the historical data, Mumbai on an average observes 14.4 number of rainy days in September. The highest 24 hour rainfall ever recorded during the month is 318.2 mm, observed on September 23, 1981.

Meanwhile the maximum temperature in the region is settling in the lower thirties, which is likely to drop by 2 to 3 degrees due to the approaching spell of rain.
