Good spell of Monsoon rains approaching Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Monsoon rains in KeralaA fresh spell of rain is approaching the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This spell of good rain could be attributed to a trough developing over interior parts of Kerala and adjoining Tamil Nadu. It will bring fairly widespread rainfall for the next couple of days over Kerala, South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Monsoon in Kerala and Tamil Nadu

June was the best month in terms of Monsoon rains over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. By the end of the month Tamil Nadu had received 36% more rainfall than the normal average. On the other hand, Kerala was rainfall deficit to the tune of just 13%.

As of now, August 15, Tamil Nadu is within the normal limits. Here rainfall deficiency has risen up to 15%, but Kerala is rain deficit to the tune of 29%.

Rain in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu lies in the rain shadow area and receives major amount of rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon season, from October to December. However, this year the state has received on and off good rains during the Southwest Monsoon season as well. In last 24 hours, fairly widespread rainfall was witnessed over the state. Vellore recorded 52 mm of rainfall, Tirupathur 42 mm, Salem 23 mm, Puducherry  16 mm, Pamban 15 mm and Dharnapuri 11 mm of rainfall.

Rain in Kerala

Rain has still not picked up in Kerala. In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Saturday, Punalur received 7.3 mm and Kottayam 7.4 mm of rain.

Normally during Monsoon season, the West Coast including Kerala receives very good rains. However, this time around, the off-shore trough has been mostly weak. This has resulted in poor rains along the West Coast.
