Good showers lash Tamil Nadu, more rains expectedAfter being lashed by rains due to Cyclone Roanu in May, good showers have once again made an appearance over several parts of Tamil Nadu. While some areas have received light rainfall only, moderate showers have been observed over other parts of the state.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Coonoor recorded a good 21 mm, followed by Karaikal where 19.7 mm rainfall was received. Other areas to have received rains include Nagapattinam 9.3 mm, Kanyakumari 8.8 mm, Kodaikanal 3 mm, Tiruchirapalli 2.2 mm and Dharmapuri 1 mm.

During the late afternoon hours, some convective clouds also developed north of Chennai. Due to this cloud formation, heavy to very heavy rains were also observed over areas including Periaapalayam and Gummidipoondi.

These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation which is currently over Telangana and adjoining Marathwada. Also, moist winds from the sea have been increasing the moisture incursion over the South Indian state.

During the next 24 hours, rains are expected to continue over interior parts of Tamil Nadu. Central and northern parts of the state will also receive good rains. However, most parts of South Coastal and South Interior Tamil Nadu are expected to remain dry.

Usually, the state of Tamil Nadu does not receive good rains during the Southwest Monsoon period as it lies in a rain shadow area. However, the state receives most of its annual rains during the Northeast Monsoon which affects the region around the later part of the year.
