The entire West Coast has seen above normal rains this Monsoon season. In fact, Southwest Monsoon was the first to arrive over the southern parts of this region followed by a rapid advancement over rest of the West Coast.
All these three regions of Coastal Karnataka, Konkan and Goa, Kerala are the rainiest pockets wherein rainfall amounts for a month even reach over 1000 mm in some pockets.
As of today, Konkan and Goa region is observing a rainfall surplus of 47 percent, Coastal Karnataka has recorded a surplus of 22 percent and Kerala has seen rains in excess of 21 percent.

Rains along the West Coast are governed by the presence of an off-shore trough which is a semi-permanent feature during the Southwest Monsoon season. However, the entire stretch does not get activated at once and only a portion sees moderate to heavy rains while the other sees lesser rainfall.
Another reason why the region gets rains is the Monsoon trough which generally runs along the Indo-Gangetic Plains. The trough when shifts towards the foothills, good rains begin over the West Coast, specially the Konkan region.
Shortly, such situation is expected to persist when rains will increase along the West Coast. The cyclonic circulation which has been persisting over Punjab region will shift and the trough will move towards the foothills during the next 48 hours.
Thus, until the next 48 hours, Coastal Karnataka as well as Kerala are likely to see good rains while rains will increase over the Konkan region July 2 onward, when Mumbai will also see some heavy spells of rains.
