Chennai has been receiving light rains since many days. While the month of June remained mostly dry with very few spells of rain, July witnessed good showers. At present, Nungambakkam Observatory has already received 117.8mm while the normal rainfall for July stands at 103.8mm, which means it has already surpassed its monthly mean in less than half a month.
In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Saturday the city received few short spells of rain and thundershowers of 0.2 mm. As per Skymet Weather, at present cloudy sky persists over the state capital of Tamil Nadu.

It is anticipated that light to moderate rainy spells will occur over some parts of the city in the next 24 to 48 hours. These rainfall activities can be attributed to the Low-Pressure area which prevails over Northwest Bay of Bengal.

The associated Cyclonic Circulation is also extending up to mid tropospheric levels and is likely to tilt in the southwest direction as this system will be moving in the northwest direction.
Due to these combined weather systems, rainfall activity is expected over Chennai. However, the intensity of rains may not be much and can be patchy and highly localized as well. Though warm weather may prevail till rain splashes the city, pleasant weather conditions may take over the city once those droplets of rain fall over Chennai.
