For the last few days, good rains have been observed over Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, and many areas of Kerala. In the last 24 hours, Coonoor recorded a good 52 mm of rain, Salem 29 mm, Kannur 27 mm, Vellore 25 mm, Kozhikode 27 mm, Punalur 25 mm, Agumbe 65 mm, Madurai 21 mm, and Mangalore 15 mm.
The month of June ended at a surplus of 19 percent for South Peninsula. However, due to subdued rainfall activity, both July and August ended with a deficit of 20 percent. Now, Southwest Monsoon has come to an end and September has turned out to be somewhat better as it ended with a deficit of 15 percent.
The improvement in the rain figures has mainly been due to the recent rainfall over the region. These rains have been attributed to the two weather systems, one being the cyclonic circulation, which is now moving towards the west. This system has given good rains over Kerala and parts of Karnataka. Another cyclonic circulation, which is at present over the Andaman Sea has been inducing scattered rain over Tamil Nadu. Moreover, an offshore trough off South Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast was also present during the last week of September. This resulted in good rains over southern parts of Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, fairly widespread rain will continue over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, and parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next two to three days.
Also, the Arabian Sea system is moving and a trough extending from this system up to Karnataka coast will continue to give good rains over Kerala and some parts of Karnataka. The Bay of Bengal system will also move towards Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and will increase rainfall activity over the region.
