Most parts of Karnataka, particularly coastal region of the state, have been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall since last few days. Agumbe has received 234 mm rainfall is last 24 hours. Also, Honavar has recorded 37 mm rain, Mangalore 41 mm, and Madikeri 65 mm.
At present, the Monsoon surge is active from Konkan and Goa to Kerala coast. Therefore, coastal Karnataka and many districts of interior Karnataka are expected to receive moderate to heavy rains in next 24 to 48 hours.
It must be noted that as of now, coastal Karnataka is deficit by 26%, north interior Karnataka by 34%, and south interior Karnataka is 1% above normal in terms of rainfall received. South interior part of the state is likely to improve its rainfall figures soon. The ongoing rain showers over coastal Karnataka may bring down the deficit.
The reason for the deficit being observed in most parts of the state is subdued rainfall activity in July. The off-shore trough remained weak over the West Coast for quite some time resulting in decreased rainfall activity over the region.
But now, the off-shore trough is active and is likely to give good rains over the region. The trough will be assisted by active Monsoon surge. Mostly coastal parts of the state will receive good rains and some parts of interior Karnataka are also expected to witness light to moderate rainfall activity.
