In the month of June, almost all parts of India including Rayalaseema received good Monsoon showers. By the end of the month, Rayalaseema ended with a deficiency of just 2 per cent. However, throughout July most areas in the country witnessed subdued rainfall activity. Along with Marathwada, Rayalaseema was one of the most deficient pockets in the country during this period.
As on August 1, the rain deficiency in Rayalaseema increased to a good 36 per cent. On August 15 and 16, the region became 38 per cent rain deficient. However, the last one week has given good rains over the country, which has significantly reduced the rain deficiency. On August 21, the region received six times more rain than its daily normal, while on August 22, Rayalaseema observed three times more rainfall.
Right from August 17 to 23, the pocket has observed above normal rain. The rainfall deficiency kept dropping. On August 21 and 22, the rainfall deficiency stood at 21 and 16 per cent, respectively. As on August 23, the rainfall deficiency has dropped to 14 per cent, which is a significant improvement. During the last few days, Peninsular India has been receiving good rains.
Rayalaseema has also witnessed scattered light to moderate rain. Normally, Rayalaseema, North Interior Karnataka and Marathwada remain rain deficient, i.e. they usually witness subdued rainfall activity throughout the season.
However, in the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Kalingapatnam has received a good 27.6 mm of rain. Also, Nellore and Ongole observed 10.7 mm and 1.3 mm of rain, respectively. Now, light rain will continue for another 24 hours or so.
Also, good spells of rain are expected on August 27 and 28. During this period, fairly widespread light rain with moderate rainfall at one or two places may occur. These rains will be attributed to a trough which will extend from Odisha to North Tamil Nadu across Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. By the end of this month, rainfall figures for Rayalaseema may improve even further.
