During the last 24 hours, the rainfall activity has decreased significantly over the state of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. However, light rains have occurred at isolated places over extreme southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The other parts witnessed a dry and slightly warm day while night remained pleasant.
Due to the presence of northeasterly moist winds from the Bay of Bengal, we expect short spells of light rain at isolated places over the coastal areas for the next 48 hours. Thereafter, the rainfall activities would increase further over Tamil Nadu from December 23. Further, these rains will be spreading over most of the parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala between December 24 and 25.
The reason for these rains can be attributed to a trough of low which is now extending from Equatorial Indian Ocean to Southwest Bay of Bengal across the Sri Lanka coast and will be shifting northwards.
A Cyclonic Circulation is persisting over Lakshadeep area and adjoining region in the lower levels which is leading to the flow of moist winds from Arabian sea to Kerala. Hence, light rain is very likely at isolated places during the next 36 to 48 hours. Post this, the rainfall activity is likely to increase due to a fresh weather system. The days will be warm and the night will be pleasant.
Places such as Puducherry, Naginapattinam, Pamban, Rameshwaram, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram, etc will be affected by these rainfall activities.
