Since the beginning of October, good rains have been lashing the West Coast. Areas including Karnataka and Kerala have been particularly receiving good showers during this period. Not only this, on and off rains have also been witnessed over Konkan and Goa. However, the intensity of rain is comparatively less than that in the southern parts.
In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Mangalore recorded a whopping 71 mm of rainfall, followed by Kannur where 67 mm rain was observed. Also, Kochi received 40 mm, Punalur 38 mm, Kozhikode 25 mm, Agumbe 23 mm, and Alappuzha 15 mm.
Southwest Monsoon ended on September 30 with a deficiency of 26 percent each for both Coastal Karnataka and Kerala. Now, the rain figures in October have been on the higher side due to the ongoing rainy spell. As on October 5, Kerala has recorded a rainfall surplus of 47 percent, while Coastal Karnataka observed 45 percent surplus rainfall.
Though, these rainfall figures will not be included in the Southwest Monsoon. However, they will benefit in water recharge and soil moisture restoration. These rains will also be good for the Rabi crops.
Now, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the East-central and southeast Arabian Sea, which may increase the rainfall over the region.
