Good rains in Peninsular India to continue for another 72 hours

September 28, 2015 12:18 PM |

Coimbatore RainsSouthwest Monsoon has picked up pace in Peninsular India in the fag end of September, particularly over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka. But if we analyse the performance of Monsoon this season in the region, June was the only month when the rainfall amount was surplus by 19%. July and August observed poor rains and both the months ended with a deficiency of 20% each.

September has turned out a little better compared to the previous months. The cumulative rainfall deficiency in Peninsular India as on September 27 stood at 16%, which is considered normal in meteorological terms.

Now as we are approaching the end of the month, Southwest Monsoon has again picked up pace. For instance, Madurai and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu have recorded 68.8 mm and 53 mm of rain, respectively in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday. During the same period Punalur and Kochi also received 26.6 mm and 18 mm of rain, respectively.

The rainfall in the region is due to discontinuity of winds over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. There is also a trough in the lower levels, extending from westcentral Bay of Bengal to North Tamil Nadu coast, which is giving rain in the region.

According to meteorologists at Skymet, fairly widespread rain is expected over interiors of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka for next 3 days. This will help in improving the rainfall figures further in Peninsular India.
