The Gateway to South India, Chennai had been reeling under dry and warm weather conditions since past few days. However, light rains have commenced over the city in the past 24 hours.

Weathermen at Skymet Weather expect light to moderate rain and thundershowers to continue over many parts of the city for the next three to four days.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 2 mm of rainfall, whereas Meenambakkam Observatory in Chennai observed a mere 1 mm of rain.

The reason behind these rains could be attributed to multiple weather systems, a cyclonic circulation that is over east central Arabian Sea. Another circulation is persisting over Southeast Bay of Bengal. From this system runs a trough up to South Interior Karnataka.

Together these systems are inducing moisture over the region, thus paving way for some good intermittent rain and thundershowers over Tamil Nadu and its capital city, Chennai. These spells are most likely to be of short duration and will cover limited areas only.

During this period, the weather will continue to be little warm and humid with maximum temperatures settling around 33-34 degrees. Minimum temperatures are also expected to range near 28-29 degrees.

For the month of October, the monthly average rainfall mean of Chennai stands at 147.7 mm.
