Monsoon rains have reduced over the state of Maharashtra and the state has been experiencing subdued rains for the last couple of days. Apart from Konkan division, all the other regions are witnessing light to very light Monsoon rains.
On the past day, light to moderate rains occurred over South Konkan with scattered light spells over South Madhya Maharashtra and North Konkan region. Vidarbha and Marathwada witnessed isolated spells.
In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Monday, Mahabaleshwar recorded 24 m of rains, Ratnagiri 12 mm, Kolhapur 4 mm, Satara 3 mm, Mumbai 2 mm, Harnai 2 mm, Pune 0.7 mm, Solapur 2 mm, Sangli 2 mm, and Amravati witnessed 0.4 mm of rains.
Now, a well-marked low-pressure area is over north of Odisha and adjoining area. This would gradually move inland.
In the wake of this, we expect rains to increase over Vidarbha and the region would receive few moderate to heavy spells. This will also strengthen the monsoon and westerly winds over the West coast. Therefore, South Konkan may also witness increased rain activities. Scattered rains would continue over Madhya Maharashtra and North Konkan.
Weather of Marathwada is expected to remain dry. However, isolated light to very light rain at one or two places cannot be ruled out. Thus, cities like Nagpur, Gondia, Chandrapur, Wardha, and Akola may receive these rains. Mumbai, on the other hand, would receive light showers.
At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:
Farmers in Marathwada are advised to provide protective irrigation to the standing crops wherever available. The infestation of pink bollworm is reported in many cotton-growing districts; therefore farmers are advised to pheromone traps as well as chemical control. In Vidarbha and Konkan, farmers are recommended to complete intercultural operations in standing crops.
