Northeast India is the rainiest pocket both during the Monsoon as well as the Pre-Monsoon months. During the Pre-Monsoon period, northern and the central parts of the country see more of dust storm, thunderstorm along with squally winds and less in terms of precipitation. Meanwhile, the northeastern parts of the country do not witness dust storm and the region records good amounts of rains along with hailstorms etc.
Unlike the northern and central parts of India, the topography of Northeast India is varied. Right from plains, valleys, and hilly regions to thick forests, the region has it all. This topography makes Northeast India different from other pockets in terms of weather activities.

One thing that does remain common is that May is the peak Pre-Monsoon month for the northeastern part of the country. Northeast Monsoon observes Pre-Monsoon rains only until May as Monsoon makes an onset over the region in the beginning of June itself.
While Northeast India happens to be one of the rainiest pockets of the country, three-digit rains are not seen here in a span of 24 hours. Even Meghalaya, which happens to be the rainiest pocket does not see three-digit rainfall activity. The showers are sharp, and the duration is of only a couple of hours.
Usually, it is the mountains that receive very good rains but for Northeast India, it is not the same. Even the plains witness good rains as all the stations in the plains align the valley.
Four cities of Northeast have been taken into consideration namely Kohima which lies at an elevation of 1405 metres, Shillong at 1525 metres, Imphal at 780 metres, and Guwahati at a mere 47 metres.
This time, March was quite poor for these localities in terms of rains. However, April was better for the regions with Guwahati receiving 112 mm of rains against 159 mm in April, Shillong 174 mm against 116 mm, Imphal 112 mm against 132.7 mm, and Kohima 108 mm of rainfall.
The month of May is expected to be even better for these cities, as a rainy start has already been witnessed. More rains are expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh as well as NMMT. Thus, rainy May is in store for Kohima, Shillong, Imphal, and Guwahati.
