The Southwest Monsoon has generally been poor for Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada this Monsoon season. Madhya Maharashtra saw the season end at a deficiency of 33%, while Marathwada and Konkan were deficient by 40% and 30%, respectively. Vidarbha was however better with rainfall deficiency of 11%, which is considered normal in meteorological terms.
But Madhya Maharashtra in the month of October has been receiving good rains. And coastal areas have not disappointed either. The other two pockets of Vidarbha and Marathwada are observing poor rains. However, it is to be noted that rainfall in the month of October decreases significantly.
The system in the Arabian Sea which initially was over Lakshadweep and southeast Arabian Sea moved northward staying close to coastal Karnataka and giving rain over the region and Madhya Maharashtra.
In the last thirteen days Madhya Maharashtra has observed normal rains of -6%, while Vidarbha is deficient by 97% and Marathwada by 54%. The Konkan region has observed surplus rain of 10%.
For instance, the average monthly (October) rainfall for Pune in Madhya Maharashtra is 77.9 mm and the city has already received 67 mm of rain. Solapur has also received 76 mm of rain against the normal of 89.5 mm.
On the other hand, Nagpur in Vidarbha region hasn’t observed rain at all, while its monthly (October) average is 77 mm. Akola has received a paltry 5 mm of rain against the average of 47 mm.
Meanwhile, the temperatures in Vidarbha and Marathwada are on the rise. And with rainfall activity fading out in Madhya Maharashtra, the day temperature in the region is also expected to rise.
