This year, the state of Odisha has received good rainfall activities and as of now, the state is rain surplus by 15 percent. Odisha is one of the states which continues to receive rainfall till the end of Southwest Monsoon, which means, throughout the month of September. The state of Jharkhand on the other hand is currently rain deficient by 20 percent.
However, the last 24 hours have resulted in some good showers over the state of Jharkhand with Daltonganj recording 19 mm of rains while Ranchi seeing 3 mm of rainfall. Light rains of 2 mm were also seen over Koraput.
Now, a north south trough is extending from Sub Himalayan West Bengal to Interior Odisha. Therefore, light to moderate rains with one or two heavy spells are expected to continue over the state for at least the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the intensity of rains will decrease but scattered light to moderate rains will continue.
The intensity of rains will be more over the northern districts including Baripada, Balasore, Keonjhargarh, Bhadrak, Angul, Kendrapada and Sambalpur whereas Koraput, Raigada and Malkangiri may receive scattered rains only.
The eastern end of the axis of Monsoon trough will remain near the foothills and a north south trough will continue to occur over parts of Odisha and West Bengal. However, the trough due to its oscillating nature may fluctuate but on and off rains may continue over Odisha at least for a week.
Talking about the state of Jharkhand, light to moderate rains are also expected over many parts for at least the next four to five days. Cities of Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Dhanbad may receive good showers. As rainfall continues over the state throughout September, it may bring down these deficiency figures by the end. However, rain deficiency is not expected to go down significantly.
