Monsoon rains in the month of June were good across the country including Peninsular India. Rainfall during the month was surplus by 19% in the region. But July and August saw a significant drop in rainfall activity due to which both the months ended with a deficiency of 20% each.
September has turned out to be a little better in terms of rainfall. Monsoon activity during the first half of the week was good in the region, but thereafter rainfall took a backseat. However, the rainfall deficiency as on September 23 was observed at 15%, which is an improvement of 5% from the previous month of August.
Now rainfall activity in the region is again expected to pick up pace. Fairly widespread rain is likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Rayalaseema. Currently there are two cyclonic circulations, one over Tamil Nadu and adjoining South Interior Karnataka and Kerala, and the second one over Lakshadweep region. Both these systems will enhance rainfall activity over Peninsular India.
This rainfall activity will continue for another 3 to 4 days. Thereafter rainfall will be confined to Kerala and South Coastal Karnataka. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Kodaikanal has received 27.6 mm of rain, Nizamabad 25 mm, Madikeri 15 mm, Mysore 8 mm and Coimbatore 3.8 mm of rainfall.
