It is seldom that seven states of Northeast India observes dry spell. To put it more simply, on one hand, most parts of the country are reeling under heatwave conditions and on the other hand; northeastern states of the country are witnessing good rain and thundershowers activities.

Since the beginning of the month of March, scattered rain has been going on over many states of the region.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Cherrapunji recorded 48.2 mm of heavy rainfall, followed by Mangan 26.3 mm, Tadong 15.8 mm and Gangtok 13.6 mm. Other areas to have observed good showers were Mazbat 11.4 mm, Tinsukia 10 mm and Jorhat 8.8 mm.

The reason for this rain activity can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and surrounding areas. Moreover, humid winds are reaching these states from the Bay of Bengal.

As per Skymet Weather, light to moderate rains are expected to continue over the northeastern states for another 24 hours. Also, isolated heavy showers cannot be ruled out.

With these continuous rains, maximum temperatures are expected to witness a drop and will remain below normal for next few days. However, this rainy spell is not expected to bring much change to the current rain deficiency over the region.
