Good rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal result in rain deficiency to reduce

The state of West Bengal consists of Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal. Both these subdivisions have totally different geographical areas in terms of terrain and also have opposite Monsoon rains. Moreover, in terms of Monsoon showers, both of these areas are never in tandem with one another.

The axis of Monsoon trough is responsible for giving rains over the Sub Himalayan West Bengal while the systems forming in the Bay of Bengal give rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal. In fact, the hilly regions and the foothills of Sub Himalayan West Bengal including Hasimara, Cooch Behar, Siliguri and Jalpaiguri are the rainiest pockets.

This year, Southwest Monsoon arrived late over West Bengal as it remained stagnant for a long time. The month of June was deficient for Gangetic West Bengal to the tune of -20%.

July rainfall has generally been good for most parts barring East and Northeast India. In fact, areas which were observing rainfall deficiency have been covered but East and Northeast India remained rain deficient.

On 10th July, the rainfall deficiency of Gangetic West Bengal was at - 25% and increased to – 27% on July 20.

However, the last 3-4 days have been rainy for these pockets. Some parts have also seen heavy rainfall activity due to which the rainfall amount has come within the normal limits and stands at - 18%.

During the next one week, fluctuating pattern of rainfall is expected with rainfall on a few days and dry weather on the others.

During the end of the month, good rainfall may once again occur due to which rainfall percentage will remain within the normal limits.
