Good rainfall activity to continue along the West Coast

September 16, 2015 12:02 PM |

Karnataka rainKonkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala are the three rainiest sub-divisions of the West Coast. However, the Southwest Monsoon has not been good for these places this season due to which the rainfall deficiency has been high.

According to the rainfall data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the sub-division of Konkan and Goa is 33% deficient at the moment. While Kerala and Coastal Karnataka are 29% and 27% deficient, respectively. Since the rainfall averages for these regions are very high, a short spell of dry weather could also push up the deficiency to a large extent.

For instance, Coastal Karnataka has received over 2000 mm of rain so far this season, while Konkan and Goa has received close to 1800 mm of rain and Kerala about 1400 mm of rainfall. But these regions are still short of their normal averages for the season.

However, the rain gods have shown some mercy and the region (West Coast) has been observing some heavy rainfall activity for the last two days, particularly Konkan and Goa and Coastal Karnataka sub-divisions. Kerala has been experiencing moderate amounts of rain.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Ratnagiri in the Konkan and Goa region has received 107 mm of rain. Ela in Goa has observed 120 mm of rain during the same period. While Karwar and Honavar in Coastal Karnataka have recorded 107 mm and 66 mm of rain, respectively. Kudlu in Kerala has witnessed 51 mm of rain.

A well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, Coastal Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh region is activating the off-shore trough and resulting in good amounts of rain along the West Coast.

The weather system (Low Pressure Area) is likely to persist for some more time and move inland, closer to the West Coast. This will help in giving more rainfall over the region for another 3-4 days.
